Culture and Sun on the Bay of Biscay

It’s easy to fall in love with San Sebastian. Coined by our own Members as a “mini Paris,” it beats to a unique vibe, named the 2016 European Capital of Culture. The sultry and playful Basque city, located on Spain’s northern coast, exudes an effortless cool. A sparkling, scalloped-shaped bay is lined by four miles of golden sands and draws sun seekers every summer. The city has three main beaches: Playa de la Concha rivals any urban beach in Europe, Playa da Zurriola attracts international surfers, and Playa de Ondarreta, located on the western end of the city, is nicknamed The Millionaire’s Belt, due to over-the-top holiday homes. Foodies make pilgrimages to San Sebastián to eat their way through its surprising number of Michelin-starred restaurants. Hardcore food lovers can sign up for half-day classes—from grilling to avant-garde sweets—at the Basque Culinary Center. The lively Parte Vieja, or Old Town, is home to a cluster of both traditional and more inventive pintxos bars, including Borda Berri and A Fuego Negro.
